AV/Tech Club Student Breaks Service Hours Record

March 7, 2018 (Independence, IA) – Independence high school AV Club member, Connor Music, has broken the record for volunteer service hours with nearly half of a year of service time remaining.

Music has earned 366.5 hours since the service year began in July 1, 2017 by volunteering at school football games, holiday productions, fall plays, musicals, and the 4th of July celebration. Music surpassed the previous record of 358.25 hours held by class of 2017 graduate, Spencer Rodriguez.

According to AV/Tech advisor, Travis McBride, the high number of service hours is common in the AV club and he applauds the efforts of the students involved. To earn an AV/Tech letter, students must volunteer at least 80 hours at 20 events throughout the year.

In the AV/Tech Club students develop skills in graphic design, lighting, audio, video and television production. The ability to volunteer ensures that these students are cultivating these skills in an organic way and gaining real world work experience. The club has members from 7th-12th grade and gives students the chance to work at sporting events, concerts, plays and community events.

Recently, the AV Club helped produce a video for the performance of the 34th Iowa Army National Guard Band “42Romeo.” Currently, club members are preparing for the 2018 High School musical “The Addams Family,” which is set to premier on March 15th-17th at 7:30 p.m.

“Congratulations to Connor!  He is setting a great example by getting involved through volunteering and contributing to the school and community,” McBride said. “With four to five months of volunteering time left, Connor will have plenty of opportunities to continue volunteering and watch his service hours reach new heights.”
