The fifth grade curriculum provides challenging and engaging experiences for students. Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) have been developed and are available on each teacher’s website. The main focus of GLEs at fifth grade include:
Reading: Students use comprehension skills and strategies to understand a variety of kinds of literature including fiction, nonfiction, historical fiction, biographies, poetry, and folktales.
Writing: Fifth graders write for a variety of purposes-to tell a story, to persuade, to describe, and to explain.
Math: Students study place value using decimals of numbers up to the billions, addition and subtraction of decimals, multiplication and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals, geometry, and fractions.
Science: Units covered include light, the eye, the metric system, the skeletal/muscular systems, magnetism, electricity, and Fish Iowa.
Social Studies: Fifth graders learn about Native Americans, explorers, the Westward Expansion, Iowa history, the colonies, and the Revolutionary War.
