Farm to School Program

The Independence Community School District became a Farm to School Chapter with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in June 2009. This makes them a grandparent of the Farm to School effort in Iowa. Independence’s former School Food Service Director, Kelly Crossley, was one of the first directors in the state who connected with area farmers to menu local foods. When she left, the District took an innovative approach to fill her position.

The new food service director position would also serve as a part-time Farm to School Coordinator. This job appealed to Winthrop, Iowa native, Jessica Weber, who had recently returned to the state with a degree in baking and pastry arts from Chicago’s La Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. Jessica sees the importance of local foods in schools. Working with people and coordinating Farm to School efforts are the favorite parts of her job.

Getting Involved

Join us for Weeding Wednesdays this summer in the school gardens. If you have any questions, know of anyone interested in being a part of our chapter, or would like to be included in our e-mail updates, please contact me, Jessica Weber, at 334-7423 or email me.

Please, share with us your ideas and your passion for the health of our students as well as the health of our earth!

Thank you!

-Annette Harbaugh, Food Service Director, updated June 2013.
