Silver Cord program allows students to give back

Teaching students to give back to and serve their communities is one of Independence Community School District’s main priorities. The district’s Silver Cord Program encourages students to do just that.

The Silver Cord Program is a distinguished award given to students who show outstanding volunteer efforts outside school walls. Since 2012, students have donated more than 20,000 hours of their time through the Silver Cord program by assisting with senior living activities, mentoring younger students, volunteering at local events, and much more.

To qualify, students must complete 50 hours of volunteer work each year, or 200 total hours, before May 1 of their senior year. Students who meet the hour requirements are awarded a silver cord to wear with their cap and gown, and are honored with special recognition during commencement.

The program was created with not only the local community in mind, but also the students who would participate in it. The program is very valuable when it comes to filling out scholarship applications and considering future career choices. According to Volunteer and Mentor Coordinator Val Maximovich, the program has allowed students to create a strong bond with their local community.

“We are proud of the many community relationships we have made, and we look forward to the future,” said Maximovich.
